The mitten is worked in rounds. Cast on 19+9+18+8=54 stitches dividing them over 4 needles as directed, use long-tail cast-on and work over two needles held together to get an elastic edge. Make sure that the cast-on edge is not twisted and using the fourth needle (the one with 8 stitches) knit 1 stitch from the first needle (the one with 19 stitches). /  18+9+18+9=54 sts

Work in rounds.  Start by picking up 1 stitch between the held stitches and the cast-on stitches on the right side of thumb opening for left thumb and on the left side of thumb opening for right thumb.
