Ripple Shawl

Designed by Teresa Chorzepa

SKILL LEVEL:  Easy + (Level 3)

SIZE: One Size

About 20 x 62 in. (51 x 157.5 cm)

GAUGE

1 ripple = about 5 in. (13 cm) measured from peak to peak.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Cl (cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, *yarn over, insert hook in same st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; rep from * once more, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. Shawl is worked in one piece in a ripple crochet pattern. The ripple pattern is easy to do, but it’s important to remember that you may need to work several rows before the ripple pattern becomes clear.
2. The ripple pattern consists of alternating (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) peaks and 2 Cl valleys. Take care to keep the peaks and valleys of each row aligned.
3. Yarn color is changed to make stripes.
4. To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Proceed with new color; fasten off old color.

STRIPE SEQUENCE

Work (6 rows with A, 2 rows with D) 4 times, (6 rows with B, 2 rows with D) 4 times, (6 rows with C, 2 rows with D) 3 times, work 5 rows with C – 93 rows total.

SHAWL

With A, ch 71.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – you will have 70 sc at the end of Row 1.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this row and in all following rows), turn, (sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc) twice, sk next 2 sc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sc, *sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, Cl in next sc, sk next 4 sc, Cl in next sc, sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sc; rep from * 2 more times, (sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc) twice, sk next 2 sc, dc in last sc – 4 ripples.
Rows 3-5: Ch 3, turn, sk sp between turning ch and next 3-dc group, (3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups) twice, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, *3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups, Cl in next sp between 3-dc group and Cl, sk sp between next 2 Cl, Cl in next sp between Cl and next 3-dc group, 3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, (3 dc in next sp between 3-dc groups) twice, dc in sp between last 3-dc group and turning ch.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, sk next dc, sc in next 8 dc, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, *sc in next 6 dc, sc in next 2 Cl, sc in next 6 dc, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, sc in next 8 dc, sk next dc, sc in top of beg ch – 72 sts.
Change to D in last st.
Row 7: With D, ch 3, turn, sk next sc, dc in next 8 sc, 3 dc in next sc, *dc in next 7 sc, sk next 2 sc, dc in next 7 dc, 3 dc in next sc; rep from * 2 more times, dc in next 8 sc, sk next sc, dc in last sc.
Row 8: Ch 3, turn, sk next dc, dc in next 8 dc, 3 dc in next dc, *dc in next 7 dc, sk next 2 dc, dc in next 7 dc, 3 dc in next dc; rep from * 2 more times, dc in next 8 dc, sk next dc, dc in top of beg ch.
Change to A in last st.
Row 9: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, sk next dc, sc in each dc across to last 2 dc, sk next dc, sc in top of beg ch – 70 sc.
Rep Rows 2-9 following Stripe Sequence until all rows but last row of Stripe Sequence have been completed.
Last Row: With C, sc in each dc and Cl across, working ch-1 over each ch-3 sp.
Fasten off.
